I just put down $55 for the Kickstarter for Shovel Knight from Yacht Club Games. I’m excited for this game. Very excited.
Shovel Knight is a love to the 8-Bit era and play a bit like the best parts of Mega Man, Castlevania, Zelda 2 mixed with a little Dark Souls to boot. It’s coming out on the PC, Wii U and 3DS and hopefully more! The game stars…well…Shovel Knight! He uses a shovel-sword-thing to tackle enemies and obstacles. You can use it to slash at enemies, dig treasure, hit fireballs back at baddies and pogo jump on dudes heads and so much more! It excites me to see what else Yacht Club are going to do with it!
Oh yeah! I guess I should point out who Yacht Club Games are! Yacht Club Games are made up of former WayForward employees who’ve worked on games such as Double Dragon Neon, Contra 4 and A Boy and his Blob, there’s some real strong talent pushing this project forward, so you know it’s in safe hands.
It’s got the same structure of Mega Man with the levels and a themed boss for each, which I love. 8 different Knights to tackle with their own stages are going to make for a fun game. It’s got that twitch based, precision platformer game style that made the original Mega Mans so great. It’s a perfect tribute to Mega Man and from the videos I’ve seen so far…they’ve nailed it.
But what else is there? I can’t just try and excite you to donate with Mega Man. The graphics are awesome, inspired by NES games and even adhering to the NES colour palette! But with the advancement of things beyond the NES, we get more in depth use of these graphics! With scrolling and visually impressive backgrounds and pixel perfect animations for only Shovel Knight but bosses, enemies and the environment, everything is brought together for a visual feast.
It’s got some impressive talent working on the music too, with Jake Kaufman who also worked on Double Dragon Neon, Contra 4 and Mighty Switch Force at WayForward bringing that NES style to the game. But even more than that, it’s just been announced that Manami Matsumae, who worked on the Mega Man 1 soundtrack and a bit on 10 is taking part in composing a few songs too! Ah man, you guys can’t see it but all this stuff is making me smile ear to ear! It’s truly an audio, visual and gameplay feast!
Shovel Knight is currently in its final week on Kickstarter, they’ve blasted past their goal of $75,000 and with stretch goals like a 4-Player battle mode, Challenge Mode and a Mac/Linux port too, there’s plenty of reasons still to back it. Guys I’m really excited for this project, I probably rambled way too much and regurgitated some facts that you already know or don’t care about but I’m really excited for this game! I hope you can back it!
